THE NEED

Depression affects 200,000–300,000 people in Denmark every year, and 20–30% of patients do not respond to standard treatments such as medication or psychotherapy. Existing second-line therapies like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) require frequent hospital sessions over several weeks, which is both costly and inconvenient for patients.

THE SOLUTION

The system uses neuroimaging sensors to monitor brain activity and deliver low-intensity electromagnetic stimulation targeting disrupted brain circuits. It is designed for home use, with feedback and monitoring provided digitally by healthcare professionals. This approach builds on extensive clinical research and offers a more flexible and scalable alternative to current hospital-based treatments.

PROJECT SUMMARY

INSAI is developing a wearable device for brain monitoring and gentle stimulation to treat major depressive disorder. The solution allows patients to receive safe, personalized therapy at home with remote supervision, making advanced depression treatment more accessible and less dependent on hospital visits

CLINICAL IMPACT

The technology can reduce the need for heavy medication and its side effects, while giving patients the freedom to continue their daily lives during treatment. It can shorten the time from first-line to effective second-line therapy, improve treatment outcomes, and may also be adapted for other conditions like OCD, ADHD, and substance use disorders.
