PROJECT TEAM
Magdalena Fossum, MD PhD: Professor of pediatric surgery. PI, leader of the laboratory that has tested and developed the method. Will identify future patient indications for broader use of the device.
Anastasia Buch Kjeldgaard, MD: Certified abdominal surgeon, enrolled as PhD student. Contact person in dialogues with contractors developing parts of the product and with Lægemiddelstyrelsen regarding certification of the device.
Anette Tønnes Pedersen, MD PhD: Senior consultant, Gynecology. Treats patients with vaginal disorders. Will be involved in patient recruitment and perform interventions in the phase 1 trial.
Clara Ibel Chamorro MSc, PhD: Senior Researcher, wound healing expert. Involved in evaluations of the device in respect to epithelial wound healing.
THE NEED
In cases of congenital malformations or tissue damage caused by cancer treatments or radiation, reconstructive surgery is often limited by the lack of suitable, organotypic tissue. This can lead to long-term complications and reduced quality of life. Furthermore, International studies show that women with vaginal atresia or strictures often face infertility, reduced sexual health, and lower well-being in adulthood.
THE SOLUTION
This project introduces a new treatment option that addresses the lack of native tissue—initially focusing on restoring vaginal continuity and improving outcomes in female reproductive health. This solution is easy-to-use, faster, cheaper, and less traumatizing than current treatment options.

Reconstructive surgery
Technology
Autologous tissue expansion
PROJECT SUMMARY
This project develops a surgical device that enables fast and cost-effective tissue expansion using the patient’s own cells and collagen gel. It offers more natural reconstruction with fewer side effects, shorter hospital stays, and better long-term outcomes—improving quality of life and reducing healthcare costs.
CLINICAL IMPACT
The solution replaces non-organotypic grafts with the patient’s own tissue in a single surgery, reducing side effects and improving outcomes. It offers a faster, more natural alternative to lab-based methods—supporting better long-term health and quality of life for women.
